On February 1, 2025 at the Gaylord Resort in National Harbor, MD, the DNC will meet to elect a Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Finance Chair, Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation, and three Vice Chairs. Candidates need a majority of the votes cast, so there may be multiple ballots.
Why it matters: As new members of the DNC, we haven’t had much to do yet. Now, leadership elections are in full swing. Reflecting on the national loss, we’re going to have a say on the future of the organization that leads our party.
How it will work: Check out this explainer from my colleague Harry Khanna.
If you want to nerd out with me, here are the proposed rules for this election.
Who is running: Lots of people are throwing their names into the ring for this. Here is the list of candidates that have qualified for the ballot as of Jan. 10. Additional candidates will continue to qualify until the filing deadline on January 25th.
There will be lots of opportunities for us to hear from candidates. They’re making their rounds on media, but there are also some DNC-organized forums:
- January 11 – Southern Region (which includes Virginia!), Virtual – Watch online
- January 16 – Midwest Region, in-person at the Westin Book Cadillac, Detroit, MI
- January 23 – Western Region, Virtual
- January 30 – Eastern Region, at Georgetown University, Washington, DC
The tentative agenda for the January 11th forum is as follows:
- 11:00 a.m Welcome
- 11:05 a.m. Pledge of Allegiance
- 11:10 a.m. National Finance Chair Candidates
- 11:40 a.m. Treasurer Candidates
- 12:10 p.m. Secretary Candidates
- 1:00 p.m. Vice Chair Candidates
- 2:45 p.m. Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation Candidates
- 4:10 p.m. Forum for Chair Candidates
- 5:30 p.m. Closing Remarks
How you can get involved: If you’re a Virginia Democrat, I’d love to hear from you about your thoughts about the DNC and who should lead us going forward.
