On February 1, 2025 at the Gaylord Resort in National Harbor, MD, the DNC will meet to elect a Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Finance Chair, Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation, and three Vice Chairs.
Why it matters: Reflecting on the national loss, we’re going to have a say on the future of the organization that leads our party. Our new leaders will need to transform our party with new infrastructure and marketing and communications to fix public perception.
How it will work: Check out this explainer from my colleague Harry Khanna.
If you want to nerd out with me, here are the proposed rules for this election.
The biggest things to note are:
- Candidates need a majority of votes, so there will likely be multiple rounds of ballots for many of these positions. The candidate receiving the fewest votes will be removed from subsequent ballots. Candidates may also drop out and generally end up endorsing other candidates.
- The Charter requires gender balance in party leadership. The Treasurer, Secretary, National Finance Chair, V.C. of Civic Engagement and Voter Participation and three Vice Chairs must be balanced. Because we elect the three Vice Chairs last, their election will be used to ensure balance.
Who is running: Here is the final list of candidates that have qualified for the ballot.
There will be lots of opportunities for us to hear from candidates. They’re making their rounds on media, but there are also some DNC-organized forums:
- January 11 – Southern Region (which includes Virginia!), Virtual – Watch replay
- January 16 – Midwest Region, in-person at the Westin Book Cadillac, Detroit, MI – Watch replay
- January 23 – Western Region, Virtual – Watch replay
- January 30 – Eastern Region, 3 pm at Georgetown University, Washington, DC – Watch online
How you can get involved: If you’re a Virginia Democrat, I’d love to hear from you about your thoughts about the DNC and who should lead us going forward.
